How to determine the right height for an Art Deco pendant lamp

An Art Deco pendant lamp comes into its own when you consider the table, walking space, and sight lines in the room. With a few measurements, you can determine the correct height so that you can comfortably eat, cook, or sit without looking directly at the lamp.

What height is suitable above a table?

For a pendant lamp above a dining table, you can start with about 70 to 80 centimetres between the tabletop and the bottom of the lamp. This distance usually provides enough space for your sight and conversations at the table. The exact height depends on the size of the lamp, the height of your chairs, and how you use the space.

Measure from the tabletop upwards and temporarily mark the desired position with painter's tape or a cord. Then view the lamp from various chairs. Also, stand up for a moment. A lamp that hangs well while seated may feel too low when you are walking past the table.

For a model with a wide shade or multiple light points, extra attention is needed for the bottom. A pendant lamp with smoked glass, such as the Globo Udo black pendant lamp with smoke glass Ø55 cm, has a clear round shape. Keep plenty of free space around the lamp so that your sight at the table is not blocked.

The right position for a lamp above a dining table

A lamp above a dining table usually hangs in the centre of the surface, not necessarily in the centre of the room. Measure the length and width of the table and determine the midpoint. For a long table, an elongated fixture or a model with multiple light points fills the space more evenly. The brass 9-light pendant lamp with glass shapes and tubes from Steinhauer Reflexion is an example of a model with multiple light points.

  • Hang the lamp above the centre of the tabletop.
  • Check the position from every seat.
  • Take into account doors, walkways, and tall chairs.
  • Check if the connection point in the ceiling is directly above the desired spot.

An irregular connection point does not immediately limit your choice. With a suitable cord or a movable connection point, you can position the lamp above the table, as long as the installation is done safely. Have the electrical connection carried out according to the applicable regulations if you are unsure.

For different shapes and colours, check out the Art Deco lamps. There you will find, among others, the Globo Udo pendant lamp in black and brass with amber glass and the art-deco metal black pendant lamp Globo Aida. Choose the shape based on your table so that the lamp complements the space without making the surface visually heavy.

Hanging a pendant lamp above a kitchen island

Above a kitchen island, the free workspace counts more than at a dining table. You want to be able to chop, cook, and clean without hitting your head or hands on the lamp. A starting point is often around 75 to 90 centimetres above the work surface. Measure from the highest part of the island if the surface has different levels.

Also consider your own height. If you are tall, a slightly higher suspension may be more comfortable. Look from the main work area towards the lamp and check if the light obstructs your view. With multiple lamps, distribute the positions along the length of the island, with equal distances between the light points.

An amber glass pendant lamp can create a warm impression, while smoked glass has a darker appearance. The collection shows both directions, such as the classic amber glass pendant lamp Steinhauer Bollique LED and the Globo Udo with smoked glass. Use the colour of the glass in your choice, but primarily determine the hanging height based on daily use.

Determining the position in a seating area

In a seating area, a lamp usually hangs above a coffee table or beside a seat. Above a coffee table, you use the same method as above a dining table: look at the free sightline and ensure you can get up easily. Next to a sofa, the lamp can hang lower, as long as you do not bump your shoulder or head against it.

If your seating area does not have a central connection point, a floor lamp may sometimes fit better. The Globo Udo floor lamp art deco black and brass and the Globo Udo art-deco floor lamp black with smoked glass are examples from the collection. A ceiling lamp can be an alternative if a pendant lamp would hang too low in the walkway. The Globo Udo ceiling lamp black with amber glass is a product example for that.

View the space at eye level before you finally mount it. A lamp may look good above a table, while the same position from the sofa disrupts the view of the television, a window, or a passageway. If necessary, draw the footprint of the lamp on paper and temporarily place it on the table.

This is how you check the height for installation

First hang the lamp at the planned height when it is safe and practical to do so. Then use the space as you normally would. Sit down, stand up, push a chair back, and walk past the table. This way, you can quickly see if the lamp is hanging too low or is too much out of the space.

  1. Measure the distance from the table or work surface to the bottom of the lamp.
  2. Check the position from sitting and standing eye level.
  3. Adjust the height before you finally secure the cord.
  4. Check afterwards if the lamp hangs straight above the desired midpoint.

A lamp that hangs slightly higher often provides more openness above the table. A lower position brings the fixture closer to the furniture and can make the light source more prominent. Choose the position that fits your sightlines, body height, and walking route. For other models, you can also check the classic pendant lamps.

How high should a pendant lamp hang above the dining table?

Start with approximately 70 to 80 centimetres between the tabletop and the bottom of the lamp. Check the height from various chairs and adjust the lamp if your view is obstructed or the walking space feels restricted.

Where do you hang a lamp above a kitchen island?

Hang the lamp above the centre of the island or distribute multiple light points along its length. A starting point of about 75 to 90 centimetres above the work surface allows for working space, but your height and the shape of the fixture will ultimately determine the choice.

What do you do if the connection point is not above the table?

First, determine the midpoint of the table and then see how you can safely move the connection point. An electrician can assess which solution is suitable for your ceiling and connection. Only mount the lamp definitively when the position and the electrical connection are correct.

Measure the distance, test the sightline, and then choose the right position for your lamp above the table.
